Should I Repair or Replace My Garage Door?

Repair is usually the answer when one part has failed on an otherwise sound door. Replacement makes more sense when panels are damaged, the door has had several repairs, or you want insulation and quieter running in a hot climate.

When does repair make sense?

A broken spring, frayed cable, worn rollers or a faulty opener can all be fixed on a door that is in good shape. These are common repairs and do not mean the door is finished.

When is it time to replace?

Panels that are badly dented, cracked or warped, rust coming through the bottom section, a door that has needed repair after repair, or an old door with no insulation in a garage that bakes all summer.

What about safety?

Very old openers may lack the safety sensors that stop a door closing on someone. If your door has no sensors, upgrading the opener or the whole system is worth serious thought.

What changes the cost?

Size, insulation, material, windows and whether a new opener is needed. A technician can quote both options after looking at the door. Prices vary a lot, so get the quote before deciding.

What next?

Send a request and ask the technician to give you a repair option and a replacement option. See new garage doors for what is available.

Does a new door add value?

A garage door takes up a large part of the front of many homes, so a new door can change how the house looks from the street. If you are planning to sell, a tidy, working door also avoids a repair item on a buyer's inspection report. Even if you are staying put, a quieter, insulated door makes the garage more pleasant to use through St. George's long summers.
